# In web browser - Portal

## **Technical information**

The portal is a web application that runs in the browser. This means that when the end-user starts the application, it will initially load into the browser, which may take a moment. This will occur every time the portal is started in a new browser window.

Also, see [System Requirements](https://docs.novacura.com/flow-connect/this-is-flow-connect/technical-overview/system-requirements) for further details.

### **Language and Locale**

The portal's language is determined by the browser's language settings. If the browser is set to English, Finnish, German, Norwegian, Polish, or Swedish, the portal will use that language. In all other cases, the default language is American English.

The locale is determined by the language. For English, the US locale is used.

### **Portal App Client**

It is possible to execute Applications in the portal, for example, via custom buttons. Applications are executed in the Portal App client, which is a version of the Connect Web client. As the App client is browser-based, it is also downloaded the first time it is run in a session.

### Caching of data

See [Cache](https://docs.novacura.com/flow-connect/reference/reference/portal/cache).

* Open the Flow Connect app on your device.
* Click **Sign in.**
* Depending on how your user is signed up click **Continue with Microsoft** or **Continue with email.** If using the latter, enter your email and password, then click **Sign in with email.**

## Use the portal

As an end-user of the portal, you can view and interact with data according to how the designer has configured the pages and portlets. Your ability to manipulate data is determined by the designer's setup, including which features, tables, and actions are made available for your use within each portlet.

#### Additional authentication

See [additional authentication](https://docs.novacura.com/flow-connect/working-with-connect/on-mobile-devices#additional-authentication-when-running-an-app).

In the portal, additional authentication may be required when the page is being populated if the components used to populate the portlets are connected to connectors that require this type of authentication.

### Action buttons

On the portlet, various actions may be available to the user, such as refreshing data. Read more about Portlet actions [here](https://docs.novacura.com/flow-connect/reference/reference/portal/portlet-actions).
